Student Surveys

After listening to some of my peers and some of the dissatisfaction in some of the classes they took this year, it became apparent that there was not quite enough information on the classes for the students to make a completely informed decision on taking a specific class. Some complain about how they do not learn anything, how the class is not fun, or what the workload is for the class. In order to allow students to have more information available to them about specific classes, Michael and I plan to create a survey that will be given to students to rank certain aspects of their classes 1-10. This survey will allow for future students, once they see this survey, to make informed decisions about
what classes to take next year.

Describe what you see as the end result of your project. What will it look/feel like? How does your project align with our mission and goals as a class?
At the end of the project, we will have student opinions on the classes in this school, describing the class from a student perspective rather than a description from the teacher. The student descriptions will inform other students what to expect from certain classes, like difficulty, yet at the same time inform teachers what are the strong and weak points of their classes. This aligns with Leadership by taking first steps to assist students in choosing their classes while helping teachers improve their classes.
What are the obstacles and or challenges that you are anticipating when working on your project?
Some of the obstacles we face are:
-ways of passing out the survey
-when we should pass out the survey
-what classes should we pass the survey out to
-what questions would be the best to put on the survey

What are the milestones that you are going to meet? Be detailed.
Some milestones include:
Due-date for when the survey must be written up  -June 6
Copies of Survey made and ready to pass out        -June 13
Surveys passed out, scores compiled                      -June 16

How will you ensure that you reach your project milestones on the dates listed above? How do you think you will overcome these foreseen obstacles?
Taking the time to write up the survey should not be too much, the major problem is getting several hundred copies of a single piece of paper. In order to cut down on the number of copies being made, there will also be two surveys on one sheet of paper, requiring us to cut the pieces of paper in half. To meet the milestone date of June 13 and compiling all the scores by June 16, we will be getting Anthea to become a helper to this project because she has a paper cutter and she can assist in compiling the scores.

What materials are you going to need to successfully carry out your project?
-Paper                                   -Paper Cutter
-Approximately $15 dollars to make copies

What things besides materials are you going to need to be successful in your project? (examples: people or special training)
We will need
-Students to take the surveys
-People to pass out and collect surveys

How many people will need to help you in your project? What do you see their roles being? Be specific.
Beyond Michael and I leading this project, Anthea will be a helper. Her role will be nearly the same as ours, with the exception that she will not be coming up with questions for the survey, or go out and make the copies. Anthea will be assisting in cutting out the copies, passing them out, and compiling the data.

What is your plan to hold yourself and your group accountable for the success of the project?
In order to hold ourselves accountable, we plan on discussing either before Leadership class starts or immediately after class ends in order to check up on what has been done so far so that we can quickly move on to the next milestone

The teacher we have chosen to help us with this project is Mr. Gudor because he may have some excellent ideas for us to use to critique a class.

21 April, 2011
We spoke to Mr. Gudor and he has agreed to become our mentor for this project. he has also given us some ideas on how to modify our project, including listing only the top 1-3 classes in each topic so that some teachers may not be offended by the results.
